Begin this Very Hungry Caterpillar activity
Read the story to your preschooler more than once. Allow your child to become familiar with the characters, plot, and storyline.
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a fun, colorful story that preschoolers love. The organization of words will help with looking for patterns in text.

We made a The Very Hungry Caterpillar game board.
Here, we included a beginning, middle, and end section for our caterpillar to move around the game board.
My preschoolers painted the caterpillar and also decorated the butterfly with art supplies.

Ready to use your Very Hungry Caterpillar activity?
Use caterpillar (painted egg crate), food cutouts, and props as you reread the story.
You model the first reading. As you read, show how the caterpillar moves from the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Allow your preschooler to take out the props as you read or retell the story.
Beginning of The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Add pieces of “food” using the colored cutouts.
Middle of the story
Move your caterpillar to the Do a Dot marks that indicate the other food items as you read each one in the story.
Point to each food item as it is eaten by the caterpillar.
End of The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Allow your preschooler to move the caterpillar to the final 3 phases of the caterpillar life cycle.
