Looking for gift ideas for kids that are not toys? Me too! And when I look around my home, watching my boys play, I see that we have many great gift ideas to share with you that will bring your family closer together. These non-toy gift ideas for kids encourage shared experiences at home with friends and family. I had the biggest smile on my face as I put this collection together. Scroll until the end. It just keeps getting better!

Why non-toy gifts
When you think about it, a child’s favorite things typically reflect everyday items that children cannot keep their hands away from. Tools in the garage? They are on it. Headlamps for an epic game of tag? You know it. Their own bike lock? Say less. This is literally one of the most enjoyable lists to compile this holiday season.

Below you will find the landing page for all of my 2025-2026 best toys for kids recommendations. (Sorry, gift cards. These toys take the lead.)

TOYS FOR 2025
Gah, these toys are the best. UPDATED for 2025. These are the best toys for kids.
List of Non-Toy Gifts for Kids
Non-toy gifts make the best gifts for kids. These new toys will not only be played with, but also build life skills to help children become more confident and independent. (These ideas extend beyond books and board games, but I also have great gift roundups for them, too!)

Colored Tape
Was there ever a doubt that this would make the number one spot?! Colored tape for the win. Every time. Put a different color in each stocking, or gift the entire set. There is no wrong gift-giving option. It literally is the perfect gift.

Dictionary Safe
This isn’t your average piggy bank! Nope. This secret safe screams, Take my money and hide all my Pokémon cards so my brother doesn’t take them. It is one of the best non-toy gifts.

Headlamps
When the days get shorter, the headlamps get brighter. Nighttime hide and seek is a core memory in the making and a great option for stockings.

Switch-Eroo Markers
Cold days? Covered with these color-changing markers. Endless play.

Day Packs
We have used these day packs for years, and years, and years. Yep! Your child will hold on to their own water bottle with these!

Flashlights
Similar to the headlamp, if it lights up, my boys are a yes. They use these flashlights in their beds to read at night, and we keep one close in case the power goes out. This six-pack has a color for everyone.

Handheld Microscope
Handheld microscopes took off this year, and they are so cool! Kids have a great time exploring all of the things, both indoors and outdoors.

Butterfly Garden
Is it magic? Yep. It is Mother Nature doing what she does best. Watch live caterpillars turn into beautiful Painted Lady butterflies. This is a great opportunity for children to see their first chrysalides.

Tug of War Rope
The DWG boys crave heavy work using their large muscles to decompress after a long day. This tug-of-war rope is a fun way to bring the family together and redirect some energy.

Laminated Maps
Remember 1993? Maps were the thing to have in your bedroom. I remember my brother putting push pins in his notebook to mark the places he visited. My middle asked for one for his bedroom, and it is so fun to talk about.

Yoto Mini
The Yoto Mini is a boredom lifeline here. With so many chapter books to choose from, my eight, ten, and twelve-year-olds listen to them daily. Some favorites are Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Harry Potter.

Pizza Oven
Did you know that you might be able to get a pizza-making kit from your favorite pizza shop? We do! We pick it up on Saturday to have a ‘make your own pizza’ night, and the boys have a blast.

Play Table
This craft table is my all-time favorite and number one suggestion. We have used it for close to ten years for art, building, designing, reading, homework, and everything in between. If you are looking for a kid crafting table, this is it.

Puzzle Mat
My twenty-year-old self would have been shocked at my puzzle techniques in my mid-40s. But why do I do it? It is a fun way to share the same space with my boys. I puzzle, they dabble in and out. It is a great way to get in a little bit of quality time.

Stopwatch
What do you do with a stopwatch? I think the question needs to be, what do you NOT do with a stopwatch? Hand it over, send the kids outside, and watch it all unfold. It is one of my go-to gifts for birthday parties.

Snow Cone Machine
A snow cone machine in December? Absolutely. This is such a fun way to get the family members together as they all sip on the different flavors. Another alternative is the Ninja CREAMi to make ice cream.

Spinning Bookshelf
This bookshelf changed our lives. It holds so many chapterbooks and spins. We keep it in the upstairs hallway for the boys to share and get the books they enjoy reading.

Kids Kindle
The kids’ Kindle is a great way to keep up with reading without having to make multiple trips to the bookstore or library. It is light and portable to take on trips.

Magnetic Belts
Magnetic belts had to make the cut because they are life-changing. Children of different sizes can share them, and they are easy to put on.

Kids Bathrobe
Is there anything sweeter than a child in a bathrobe? I don’t think so. These bathrobes from Pottery Barn will last for years.

World Record Book 2026
Who looks forward to this book every year? I know we do! The 2026 book just dropped!! New books are always a hit, and although I have a separate gift guide for them, this book needed a place here.

Foldable Picnic Table
When my kids have sales in the front yard, the little girl across the street brings over this folding picnic table. (She folds and unfolds it herself!) This is a great table if you camp or need a little table for siblings to hang out at during sporting events.

Training Cones
Training cones are kinda like the stopwatch. Just hand them over, and the kids will take care of the rest. Sports equipment sparks creativity.

Roller Blades
We have tried many, many roller blades and skates. These are my favorites because they have lasted the longest, and my eight-year-old can put them on and off himself.

Kids Bike Helmet
Giro bike helped me now and forever. They are made well, and I trust they will protect my child’s head. Pick from four colors.

Big Kid Tool Set
My husband’s tool drawer is the MVP when kids come over. I think it is time for them to have their own stash. I love that this set comes with a carry case, gloves, and clamps.

Chomp Saw
Slide over art supplies, the Chomp Saw has entered the building! But don’t move too far away because once the cardboard is cut, it is time to glue and decorate. (And besides, what are you going to do with all the online order boxes anyway?) Win. Win.

Bike Lock
The best part about owning a bike is having your very own bike lock to go along with! Kids loooooove learning a combination that gives them more ownership in protecting something important to them.

Towel Clips
Why towel clips?! They make the best clips for fort building, of course! Unique gifts are always a hit.

Metal Detetector
We got this metal detector on our last beach trip, and my oldest was entertained for hours. Hide some coins and use the metal detector on your lawn over winter break!

Kid Knife Set
My boys use these knives all of the time. It helps them be more self-sufficient and independent in the kitchen. (Now, if they can just remember to throw out their orange peels.)

Eye Stickers
Eye stickers are like the crafting version of a stopwatch. Simply hand them over and let your child take care of the rest. The best part is that they are priced under $5.

Grow a Garden
My middle always wants to purchase seeds from the store. This garden set has everything he needs to get started. Put in a pair of rain boots and you have the most charming gift set.

Earthbox Jr. Kit
This Earthbox Jr. Kit is like the Grow Kit 2.0. Here, children can grow multiple things and have a larger container to plant.

Kids Luggage
This suitcase from Target has lasted us years. Grab your favorite sleeping bag or blow-up mattress, and you are all set for your next trip or sleepover.

Grow with Me Rulers
If you already have a grow with me ruler, you know how much fun it is to get measured on your birthday. If you have someone on your list with littles, this makes a terrific gift for their child’s room.
A few more non-toy gift ideas
Just when you think you’ve seen them all, I’ve got a few more ideas up my sleeve.
- Magazine subscription to Highlights or Ranger Rick. (Makes a good gift from extended family.)
- Open a savings account and show your child how to deposit money.
- Practical gifts like an alarm clock or a photo album of your family’s year together also make a fun gift.
- Season passes or a membership to the Zoo, children’s museum, amusement park, or botanical gardens in your area.
- And don’t forget those new toothbrushes and socks. (Wink, wink)
Could we possibly be done? This collection of non-toy gifts for kids was so much fun for me to put together. It was a peek inside our home at the most well-loved items.
Which ones will you gift this year? Let me know in the comments!
