Inside: Cloud dough sensory bin to learn through play. A great kid activity for home.
Cloud dough – you stole my four-year-old’s heart!
Here I was, racking my brain for a fun indoor sensory bin for my preschooler when cloud dough came to mind.
I have the ingredients on hand.
And my preschooler was entertained as I got the kitchen ready for dinner. #winning

Something is different about this cloud dough.
Here’s the thing. We’ve made cloud dough in the past. You can see here how we added our alphabet trays to mold each letter.
But then we added cocoa powder, and now we have Cloud Dough 2.0.
Adding cocoa powder has transformed this sensory bin into the most epic construction site my four-year-old could ask for.

Cloud dough feels as good as it sounds.
Touching cloud dough is magical!
It has a soft and playable texture that is hard to resist.
Touch stimulates the brain and helps generate new ideas and curiosity. There have been numerous studies on how early movement helps later academics. You’ll want to read about that here.
But that’s not all!
To read and truly understand Science and Math in the later years, we must allow children to touch and feel during the early years.
This opportunity will help make connections with future learning.
How do you make cloud dough?
Making cloud dough takes a few simple ingredients you may already have in your pantry!
8 cups of flour
1 cup of oil
Cocoa powder was added until we found the color we desired
Being an accurate physicist that I am, all of these configurations were adjusted as needed to feel “right.”
If you only have 7 cups of flour and 3/4 of a cup left of oil do you still make this?
Of course, you do!
Cloud dough is not a perfect science.

How can you store cloud dough?
You will see from our Playroom and Storage page that I have a small obsession with the storage containers from the container store.
These storage containers are sealed tight and keep the cloud tough ready to play with time and time again.
My four-year-old played with this all morning, and for weeks following.
Go ahead! Make this cloud dough sensory bin today!
