Lately, I have had a couple of requests for writing activities. This preschool activity is fantastic because your child will be writing and moving. It is literally the combination of prewriting movement magic! What do I mean? Well, for starters, check out the Stages of Writing. It all begins with lines and scribbles. Grab your chalk! Let’s do some prewriting with movement with our toddlers and preschoolers.
This prewriting activity also got us out of the house!

What is a prewriting activity?
A prewriting activity will help your preschooler better understand that letters of the alphabet have lines and curves.
Practicing this formation with bodies will form the connections they need when asked to create the letters with their hands later.
We want our preschoolers to be familiar with the lines to have more confidence when asked to write later in life.

How to set this up for your toddler
- Grab some chalk.
- Draw some lines.
- I added stopping points and arrows for interest.
Why play this outdoor prewriting game? For one, it is FUN! – Most important. My preschoolers are learning with movement.
Second, gross motor development strengthens my preschooler’s legs and balances coordination.
Supply (yes, only one supply!)
A fresh pack of chalk is like a fresh pack of markers. It never gets old and is always in season.

- Bark like a dog
- Hop like a bunny to the next stopping point
- Jump five times
- Turn around and walk backward
This easy idea is a fun way to spend the day outside. When will you take prewriting outdoors with your preschooler?

Keeping a jumbo pack of chalk has always been a lifesaver for us at home with kids. I find this 48-pack of chalk goes a long way.
