When I say click counter, you say fun. Click counter…fun. Click counter…fun. Okay, you get the idea. These counters are a hit with kids. Children will click and count all day. So, what can be more exciting than combining it with a scavenger hunt? Pretty much nothing can top this. Enjoy this click-counter scavenger hunt as your next Breakfast Invitation or when you need a minute to chill as your child races and counts throughout the house.
What is your child learning?
Oy! I truly don’t know where to begin. When playing this counting game, your child is counting, searching, collecting data, thinking, problem-solving, matching number symbols to number names, chatting about more or less, and so much more!
As I watched my seven-year-old search for the different items, phrases like, “This is so much fun” and “Wow, I cannot believe we have 42 shoes” giggled out of his mouth. And even though he is my big kid, preschoolers will also have a blast with this hands-on activity!
Craving a calmer morning?
Breakfast Invitations are simple learning games that begin the day with play.
How to play
Playing is simple. (As most early learning games should be!)
- Look at the chart.
- Read (with help) the item needing to be searched.
- Scavage around the room, level, or house to click and count.
- Get the total amount.
- Report the total amount on the paper.
PRO TIP: Is your child unsure how to write a number? This happens even with big kids! Use the click counter to double-check if the numbers look the same.
When to play
I am a busy parent to three boys and do not have much time to prep activities. Instead, I aim to create learning games that use a handful of supplies I may already own and put together in less than five minutes.
Breakfast Invitations are simple learning games that begin the day with play. I set them up in the evening after bedtime, and my child plays when he wakes up. This allows me to wake up slowly and also encourages play.
This is an activity that combines gross motor skills with fine motor strength. Pure perfection!
How to set up
Are you ready? Challenge accepted.
- Tape a large piece of paper to the table.
- Think of about five items you have around the house. Items should be more than five but less than 20 to keep interest high. This will also depend on age and maturity.
- Add an illustration to the paper.
- Add the word of the item being searched.
- Add a line for your child to return and enter the total amount found.
- Invite your child to search!
Supplies
This click counter scavenger hunt requires three supplies to get started. Take a look at this list of my favorite kids’ supplies that we reuse all the time.

Click Counters
You must trust me when I say your child needs a click counter. It sparks child-led play, and this six-pack is perfect for your home and birthday gifts.
White Paper Roll
White paper can be used for all things creative. This paper roll is one of my favorites.
Washable Markers
Do I keep a pack of markers because I remember putting the caps back on? I sure do.
There’s something special about tally counters.
If you do not yet own a click counter, you will want one. They are a fidget tool my boys use often. Use them during downtime at home, on a walk, or toss them in for your next trip. You’ll get them once you use them dozens of times.
More counting activities, please!
You got it. Counting with kids is one of my favorite ways to help kids learn through play. Here are a few of my favorites.
