Owl Babies activity.
Owl Babies is one of my all-time favorite board books. I gift it to new babies and read it dozens of times on my own. This Owl Babies activity will help retell the familiar story along with engaging in a simple art activity.
I like to keep the book and props together to invite my preschooler to revisit the story. I call this a book box.

Here is what Owl Babies is about
Owl Babies is a sweet book about a mother owl leaving her babies to hunt for food. As she is gone, her babies wonder if she will return.
With this Owl Babies activity, your preschooler can revisit the story events and talk about how the babies feel without thier mama owl.
What is a book box?
A book box is a way to help your preschooler retell a familiar story.
What is in a book box?
- A familiar book – a book that has been read many times
- Props to retell the story
Why use a book box to retell a familiar story?
By Kindergarten, children will be asked to:
- Retell familiar stories, including key details, with prompt and support.
- With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
- Identify characters, settings, and major events in a story prompt and support.
Should we master all of this now? No.
Is it a good time to expose now? Yes! This is a fun, interactive way to begin practicing this skill with your preschooler.

Before the Story Retell:
Read Owl Babies to your preschooler more than once. Allow your child to become familiar with the characters, plot, and storyline.
Owl Babies is a perfect choice for a story retell. This story has a simple plot that follows a story sequence. It also has a limited amount of characters.
Owl Babies also has the sweetest message about trust, experiencing the feeling of doubt, and the comfort of reassurance.
Allow your preschooler to decorate the owl by gluing feathers and a small paper bag. I attached a popsicle stick to the back with masking tape to make a puppet. Another idea is to paint your owl to create your puppet.

Begin to use owl, baby owls, and book as you reread the story.
- First, model retelling Owl Babies using the props from your art activity.
- As you read, use your props to retell the story events.
This activity is just one of the many activities for kids at home!

I love the paper bag owl puppet! I will have to do this as an activity with my kids and have them decorate it! It will add to the book box. Then, they can choose a mask, a puppet and/or owl babies to play with!

I love this! I teach 2nd grade, and this is so important to expose your kids to when they are young! Making it fun is important too – it’ll encourage a love of reading, which is probably the most important part of it all! Great idea 🙂
