This fun and simple color sorting activity started our morning off with play.
I call these play prompts, Breakfast Invitations, and they engage learning to inspire learning through play. We use open-ended toys that we love and keep the setup simple.
Once the Breakfast Invitation is complete, the boys then go off and play on their own. No more cranky morning TV!
Why is color sorting important for children?
Color sorting is an early math skill that allows children to begin to understand classification. When early learners color sort, they are also:
-
It is recognizing a match or pair.
-
We are seeing patterns.
-
Understanding how objects are alike and different.
Begin to start color sorting as soon as your child shows interest!
Here is how we set up this color sorting activity:
- Gather pom poms and any form of transportation toy. Here, we used a dump truck.
- Tape down the white paper.
- Take out four-six different colors of pom poms. Too many can cause your preschooler to get distracted.
- Keep the total number of pom poms to a minimum. Remember, you can always continue adding to the pile as it gets depleted.
- Add four-six different color squares to the paper. We use these felt squares that are listed in the supply list below.
- Place all pom poms and dump trucks to the left of the paper. You want your preschooler to move from left to right, just like what happens as they read and write. This is a great practice to encourage!
