Some kids enjoy making DIY Valentines for friends, and others prefer to grab the latest box of Pokemon Valentines to hand out to classmates. There is no wrong way! A Valentine’s Day celebration at school or with friends is meant for the child to express their excitement in their own way. This DIY heart Valentine for kids is an idea for your child who enjoys making their own. (And it is ridiculously cute!)

Behind the scene perks
If you come here to Days with Grey, I will also share what developmental and learning skills your child is practicing as they make these Valentines. I love it when playing and learning meet!
For starters, peeling stickers and placing stickers will strengthen fine motor muscles in the hand. Remember to peel off the backing of the stickers if your child has trouble getting them off the paper.
Next, your child will have plenty of room to write their name. Traditional Valentines you get in a box from the store can be frustrating for young children since the space to write is so tiny. Invite your child to write their friend’s name on paper before selecting your Valentine’s card to gauge their needed room.

How to make a heart Valentine
Making these DIY heart Valentines is simple after a little prep work cutting out the hearts. Make a stencil and double up your paper to make it go quickly.
PRO TIP: Some teachers ask the child to write classmates’ names, and some will ask you not to do so to make handing out faster. You can email to ask if you have not heard.
- Make a heart stencil out of cardstock or cardboard. (I know you have an Amazon box just waiting to be broken down.)
- Figure out how many hearts you will need.
- Decide on the colors.
- Trace your heart stencil onto the paper and cut your heart.
- Invite your child to decorate the heart Valentine using the eyes and making a mouth.
- Encourage your child to write their name.
- Put the hearts in a bag and backpack to avoid getting lost.
Teacher pro tip
One year, my preschooler came out of his class Valentine’s Day party, letting me know his cards were still in his backpack. Why? I asked. He replied because the teacher didn’t tell me to get them!
Now, here’s the thing. The teacher DID ask the class to get their Valentines. They did not tap him on the shoulder and say, please get your Valentines. (This is not the teacher’s fault. Instead, it is a sweet oversight from my son.)
Here’s what to do: practice. Share with your child that their teacher will say it is time, and that is when they go and get their Valentine cards to hand out to the class.
