Build your name for the win!
My toddler can recognize his name written on paper, but how can I help him recognize the letters within? Build your name is a hands-on way to begin talking about the letters in a name!

Why is a name activity important?
By Kindergarten, children will be asked to write their own name, recognizing that it must begin with a capital letter.
They will also be asked to recognize (and print) upper– and lower case letters.
This is a great game that you can use to work with your preschooler when recognizing the letters, and order of letters, in their name.

Begin to practice name recognition with Build Your Name!
When teaching children letters, begin with the letters in the name.
Children have an interest in thier name and take ownership when learning these letters.

Let’s set this up!
My child has seven letters in his name, so I drew four rows with seven circles. I also cut out seven circles for three different colors and added the letters.
Next, I added my preschooler’s name.
The first row of circles includes all of the letters in my preschooler’s name. This first row will remain uncovered.
Next, I make a row with all of the letters in his name. Here, he matches the letters.
The third row includes fewer letters in his name for my preschooler to fill in the missing letters.
The last row only includes the first letter.
Things to think about when playing this name activity!
Encourage left to right progression to introduce your child to recognize the repetition of letters in each row.
Encourage completing a color before moving to the next row and remaining in letter order.
Use terms such as uppercase G, lowercase r, and other conversation starters that extend.
