Remember learning about the number line?
Here is a simple way to introduce, and play with, a number line at home!
If we begin learning math concepts by moving our bodies, we are more like to remember. No worksheets here!
Your Kindergartener will move and count objects (sneakers) as they complete the number line. It’s a hands-on way to grow a stronger number sense.

A number line helps your child visualize number sequences.
Rather than writing 1,2,3,4,5,6,etc. on paper, Kindergarteners are now building each number and understanding that each new number adds one more.
In this case, the object is a shoe.
You can also make a number line with pom poms, board books, blocks, or Legos.
Take a look around your house and use what you already have.
Why is a number line important for kids to explore?
The concept of “one more” is a big one! It helps children understand quantity.
Understanding a number line is a math concept your child will learn in Kindergarten. The Common Core standard for Kindergarten will ask children to:
Understand that each successive number name refers to a quantity that is one larger.
Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies.

When my boys (3.5 and 5) saw the number line, they wanted to jump and walk on it.
And so I let them!
Remember, you will learn so much about your child as you watch them play.
Why did I wait to introduce the number line?
If I introduced it any sooner, I might have lost their interest, and they wouldn’t have had the time to make their predictions and conversations about what a number line is.

Supplies are simple.
painter’s tape
post-it notes
shoes found around your home
a basket to collect them in
Tape down a long line of painter’s tape to the floor.
Add smaller lines for each number.
Write the number more on the post-it notes and place it below each vertical line.
Add arrows to either side.
Place your basket of shoes to the left of the number line.
Invite your Kindergartener to come to play!
