Looking for an easy winter art idea?
You’ve come to the right place. With all ages home for winter break, this easy winter art idea is a crowd-pleaser for so many. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself making one right alongside your kids!
In a nutshell, this is a painting with tissue paper, and it is brilliant.
I was room mom, and I needed an art idea for the winter party.
In this position, I want something simple. I am looking for a small number of supplies. And I want an easy cleanup.
Funny how this sounds just like the play and art ideas I want at home with my kids.
Teachers and parents unite! This is the winter art idea we all crave.
The painting technique stems from Eric Carle.
Sure, his illustrations are high level. But for now, I will stick with the highly scaled-down version using him as inspiration.
We’ve done this a lot over the year! Check out:
For this time around, we went with mittens!

The gluing technique is simple.
I mixed liquid glue with water at a 75/25 (ish) ratio.
It was just enough to keep the glue gooey. The idea is to place the tissue paper on the mitten, and then brush over it with the glue/water mixture.
Too much water may rip the paper so add a little at a time.
Here’s how to introduce this easy winter art idea:
- Draw a large mitten on the paper.
- Rip scraps of tissue paper or lay out the tissue paper squares.
- Add water to the glue with a paintbrush.
- Demonstrate how to lay one piece of tisse paper on the mitten and “paint” over it with the glue/water solution.
Good news! You really can’t go wrong with this activity. Stay flexible and allow colors to blend as your child takes the lead. The winter mitten will take its own shape.

The final design is up to the child!
One thing I pay close attention to as I scroll ideas on Pinterest is whether or not it looks like the child did the activity. If something looks too perfect, I am moving on.
I am looking for process art that screams child created.
Every mitten painted has its unique look. – This is what makes THIS easy winter art idea great.
